Core Values, Complex World
What are my values and core principles? How do I own them in a complex and complicated professional world? How can I maintain my personal and ethical boundaries while still thriving in corporate America?
Dr. Dilara Sayeed will discuss the challenges and the opportunities American Muslim professionals have in today’s workplace. During this spiritually rejuvenating month of Ramadan, we will reflect on and define our individual narrative. It is not easy to stay true to oneself amidst the empowering, yet simultaneously corrosive environment of every day professional life…but it is essential if we are to flourish as individuals and as a community.

Dr. Dilara Alim Sayeed
Dilara’s family immigrated to the United States and her very first memory is of her HeadStart preschool graduation. As a child in the Chicago Public Schools, she observed deep inequities in education and in life. One day, she vowed, she would work to change this.
Dilara has spent the last 20 years striving to ensure that all students are learning with effective educators. She has served as a U.S. History and Language Arts teacher in 5th and 8th grades, a university instructor, a professional development coach, and an entrepreneur. She brings to the work of education leadership a unique combination of instructional expertise, strong strategy and management skills, and valuable operations experience.
In 2010, on a visit to schools in India, Dilara co-founded The Global Teacher. This Ed-Tech initiative facilitates ongoing educator collaboration utilizing a match.com-like infrastructure and curated resources. As a result, students benefit from educators who exchange online peer coaching with colleagues across the world.
Recently, Dilara led a cross-functional team at Chicago Public Schools to design and implement an Ed Tech system for over $8M of educational technology procurement at the third largest district school district in the nation. The corruption charges and resignation of her CEO in 2015 left Dilara deeply impacted at the potential for even strong leaders to succumb to hubris, self-interest, and subsequent ruin.
Dilara currently serves as Chief Education Officer at the Golden Apple Foundation, where she and her team develop highly effective teachers for students at schools-of-need across Illinois. They recently acquired a contract to scale this work to an unprecedented level in Chicago.
Dilara has a doctorate from Harvard University and masters degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She and her husband, Dr. Yousuf Sayeed, live in Chicago. When they are not working or serving in the community, they love to hang out with their adult children, listen to Saavn, ride bicycles along the lake, and ski.
